Baking fails are great when you get to eat the leftovers

I wouldn’t call that a “fail” at all. Not perfect by any means, but I’d eat the hell out of it all the same.

That’s totally fair. How about “an imperfection I want to try to fix with guests.”

And yes; I ate the hell out of it. Maybe I’ll make a few more imperfect rolls…

Hear me out - chocolate ganache glaze would be so sexy on this :heart_eyes: I think I did one with sour cream once and it was divine!

There’s a chocolate variant of these that I absolutely want to make some time. They’re divine. Like a… homemade giant ho ho.

@Mal
Yes there is! I’ve made it for the neighbor. It’s incredible!!

I don’t see how this is a fail at all.

I appreciate that. It’s one of those “I want perfection” for when / if folks are visiting, i.e. no frosting explosions and/or a more perfect roll up.

I’m very happy with how it came out and the taste is incredible.

I made my first one and the same thing happened. Idk how to prevent it.

I think it’s a mixture of oil on the pan and calibrating to my oven. The part where the fail happened was definitely not finished yet / fully baked.

@Dane
I rolled immediately after on a dish towel coated in powdered sugar, unrolled, added filling, but when I re-rolled it stuck to the towel and ripped.

@Dane
I did! I technically let it set up for just a minute or two and then rolled with the parchment paper. I also took it off the pan immediately.

That explosion seemed to be mostly due to the dough in that area not being fully finished yet. I haven’t calibrated using my oven yet (new home / new oven) so I wanted to do a test before my friendsgiving this weekend.

Exactly!! Regardless of the ‘fail’ this looks absolutely deliciousss.

It’s insanely good. The cream cheese frosting is insane. I want to smother everything with it.

This looks so delicious. Also, the first photo made it appear to be like it was in Blade Runner or Dune.

Shai’halud log.

It ain’t a fail if it tastes great, OP!

My reaction when I get baking mistakes - “Oh no, a defect. Oh well, this goes to my tummy. Yum.”

What’s this called and made of? Cream cheese in the middle or icing? :sob:

It’s called a pumpkin roll. You can make a few changes to it and also call it a yuletide log (usually covering it with frosting and sprinkling more things on top).

It’s basically three really easy components, two of which get mixed into the final dough:

  • Dry ingredients like your flour, salt, baking powder, spices, etc.
  • Wet like eggs, sugar, pumpkin (about 3/4ths a cup), etc.
  • The frosting which is a cream cheese frosting. It’s basically just cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar and vanilla (and it’s insanely good).

Mix the dry + wet. Bake at 350 for 15.

I followed this particular recipe and funny enough it had notes in it that my mother also sent me (she makes two of these every year).

Great “fail” though, I made a chocolate roll once and managed to keep it intact but I chickened out and didn’t roll it tight enough for a full swirl.

You’ve motivated me to try again soon though!

Yeah! Do it! Messing up only brings -joy- eh?!
