Hi, is it still okay to use the evaporated milk that expired in July 2023, as it is now July 2024? If not, is it possible to replace it with ordinary milk? Thank you for the tip. I opened it and threw it because it didn’t look delicious. The can was slightly damaged, so maybe that contributed to the issue.
Open it up and check. If it looks fine, you’re good to go. I’ve used expired evaporated milk without problems, but sometimes it’s darker or curdled.
Open it and if it seems normal it should be fine. I have used expired evaporated milk before without issues but I have also opened them to find the contents look a little off (darker/a little curdled)
Food doesn’t expire, coupons and magazine subscriptions do. Food goes bad or spoils over time based on a number of variables. The date on the can is the manufacturer’s best estimation of when the product will still be of reasonable quality. Canned goods like evaporated milk are pasteurized and sealed…spoilage is rare. The flavor may be off or not as strong as it would have been a year ago but unless there’s mold, a funky smell, or the consistency is suspicious it should be safe although it may not yield the best tasting result.
As a seasoned baker with over a decade of experience, I’ve learned the importance of ingredient freshness and safety. Using evaporated milk that expired a year ago is not advisable, especially since it didn’t look appetizing and the can was damaged. Food safety is crucial, and expired dairy products can pose health risks. In baking, you can often substitute evaporated milk with regular milk by simmering it until it reduces by about half, achieving a similar consistency. Always prioritize using fresh, safe ingredients to ensure the best results and avoid potential health issues.
