Hi everyone, I want to make a roll cake that is red on the outside to look like a Coca Cola can. I keep finding recipes that use red velvet cake, but I want to avoid that. Is there a way to make the cake red without using red velvet? I’m new to baking and could use some guidance. Thanks

Here are some tips for using fondant:
- Most stores sell ready-to-roll fondant, which is soft right out of the package and doesn’t need kneading. If you can, get it pre-colored. Kneading in food coloring can make it sticky.
- Use a thin layer of buttercream to help the fondant stick and keep the fondant thin.
- If your cake is small, you could put the cake on its side on the fondant and roll it to cover it. Then place a circle of fondant on top. Most people don’t get fondant perfect on their first try, so don’t be hard on yourself.
For buttercream:
- You will need to experiment with ratios to get the thickness and sweetness you like. Some people find thick buttercream easier, while others prefer a lighter texture.
- Red buttercream can be tricky because it often turns pink (like black does too). You may need to mix different colors to get what you want. I haven’t been able to get red buttercream right either, so it might be better to buy pre-colored icing.
- About your issue, I’m not sure how to help without knowing more about how the texture changed. You might have used too much food coloring.
Thanks for all the tips! I will try fondant sometime. I’ve been watching Preppy Kitchen on YouTube and following his buttercream recipe. I agree I added too much coloring; I was trying to make black and it ended up looking and feeling like wet concrete.
You could use red candy melts or red colored white chocolate chips. They might not be in the regular grocery area, but you can find them near cake pans or craft supplies. You can make a ganache with them. Fondant looks nice but tastes just okay.
