Hey guys, I need your help. My girlfriend’s birthday is coming up, and I want to bake her a cake, but I’m a total beginner at baking. I wanted to practice today, but I can’t find any simple recipes that seem decent. Could someone share an easy vanilla birthday cake recipe and maybe some tips? I’d really appreciate it.

I don’t have a specific recipe in mind, but here are some tips for you as a beginner baker:
- Make sure to prepare your baking tins before you begin, so you’re not scrambling later. Use baking paper, cupcake liners, or a light coating of oil spray to grease your tins.
- Don’t forget to preheat your oven before you start baking.
- Whenever possible, weigh your ingredients for accuracy—baking is precise!
- Ensure your ingredients like butter and eggs are at room temperature for best results.
- Be cautious not to over-mix the batter; stop as soon as the dry ingredients are just incorporated.
- Allow the cake to cool completely before you start icing or decorating to prevent any melting mishaps.
- If you follow these steps closely, you should be able to bake a great cake! I’m sure your girlfriend will love whatever you create for her. Oh, and happy birthday to her.

Try the following recipe and thank me later:
Ingredients
- 1 cup (240 ml) of milk
- 2 teaspoons (10 ml) of vanilla extract
- 2 cups (400 g) of sugar
- 4 eggs
- 2 1/2 cups (312 g) of all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 g) of baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 g) of baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 g) of salt
- 3/4 cup (180 ml) of unsalted butter, softened
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch cake pans.
- In a small bowl, combine the milk and vanilla extract.
- In a large bowl, cream together the sugar and eggs until light and fluffy.
- In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, alternating with the milk mixture, starting and ending with the dry ingredients.
- Add the softened butter and mix until just combined.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely.
