Question about cake boxes

Whether it’s a cake for a baby shower or graduation, most cakes feature embellishments on top. Is it really necessary to purchase a wedding cake box for each and every cake that has decorations on it? Generally, a cake box that measures 12 by 12 by 6 inches is too short to accommodate anything more than piping.

I taped takeaway chopsticks into the corners to give the lid more height to rest on.

When I produced personalised cakes, I took particular care to consider their height and delicacy. Sometimes I didn’t fully close the lid and instead let it lay gently on the decorations. Sometimes I’d chop off the top of the box and use another inverted box to make a taller lid. For tiered cakes, I used a very clean Home Depot box or something similar, turned on its side so that the taped bottom was in the back and the front could open like doors. Whatever you pick, make sure the cake board fits the box’s diameter exactly to prevent the cake from slipping during shipping.

When I worked at a bakery, we made a 1-inch incision in either side of the flaps. That way, we could shim the lid open and give them something to rest on while we taped them. We didn’t sell enough takes with large toppers (apart from wedding cakes) to justify getting the tall boxes standard.

Worried about cake decorations getting crushed in the box? Here’s the deal:

  • Fancy wedding cake boxes are great for tall decorations, but for simpler cakes, a regular box might work.
  • Choose the box based on your cake: Taller decorations or long travels need a taller, sturdier box (12x12x6 might be too short).
  • Save money by checking bakery supply stores, using a reusable cake carrier, or even crafting a box extension yourself!

The key? Pick a box that protects your cake’s beauty, decorations and all!
