What can I add to improve the taste of my pancakes?

I have been making homemade pancakes using my old man’s recipe.

Here it is:

  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1 tablespoon of baking powder
  • 1 spoon of sugar
  • 1 spoon of vanilla
  • 1 cup of milk

It’s a bit on the bland side.

Butter and syrup help, but I think one more ingredient would make it perfect.

Any suggestions?

You are deficient in acidity, salt, and richness (butter, eggs).

To be honest, I would just give up on the recipe and search for any typical buttermilk pancake recipe online.

Adding a small amount of salt will also increase fluff because the baking powder works best in a somewhat salty atmosphere.

Try these improvements for a tastier pancake recipe:

  • Use buttermilk and/or plain yogurt instead of milk.
  • Add an egg and a pinch of salt.
  • Mix in a little butter for extra flavor.
  • Reduce the baking powder to a teaspoon, and consider using both baking powder and a small amount of baking soda.
  • Cut the vanilla to half a tablespoon.
  • For better texture, substitute 25-30% of the flour with corn starch and let the batter rest for a few minutes before cooking.
  • Add fruit like bananas or blueberries for extra flavor.

Hello James I appreciate the updates to the pancake recipe. I’ll try using buttermilk or yogurt, adding an egg, and mixing in some butter. It makes logical to lessen the baking powder and add a small amount of baking soda. In addition, I’ll experiment with reducing the amount of vanilla and replacing some of the flour with corn starch. It also sounds nice to add fruit. Thank you for the advice!

To make your pancakes more exciting, try mixing in fresh fruits like blueberries, bananas, or strawberries into the batter. For an extra boost of nutrition, sprinkle chopped nuts like pecans, walnuts, or pistachios on top.
